About Us & What We Do!
The 1000 Mermaids Artificial Reef Project & Gallery of 1000 Mermaids is a monumental public EcoArt project in the form of an artificial reef installation that will also serve as an underwater eco-friendly destination for tourism & research. Its mission is to enhance marine habitats and expand fish habitat while providing enhanced creative, economic and educational opportunities for the benefit, education and enjoyment of the public. Mermaids have long been a symbol of humans’ connection to the ocean, this artificial reef models real people in the form of mermaids creating them into artificial reefs. These ocean friendly and artistically crafted reef modules allow their likeness to live forever on the sea floor off of the coast of Florida in Riviera and Hollywood beach.
Our goal is to create 1000 artistically crafted sculptures made-up of a sustainable concrete to bring awareness to marine conservation. Each reef deployment includes Ocean Rescue Alliance complex artificial reefs with habitat to support a variety of fish species and enable coral outplanting on each structure. Each mermaid structure is individually handcrafted by our reef building partner Chris O’Hare of Reef Cells and then strategically laid along the ocean of Florida’s east coast. Not only does this project bring awareness and support for the ocean, but it will also become the stage for a world-renowned diving destination, enable research opportunities, eco-tourism, and countless other benefits. We hope to expand this projects throughout the world.
Our main organization the Ocean Rescue Alliance a marine conservation and restoration non-profit organization that implements innovative techniques to restore our marine environments.
ORA supports saving our oceans one reef at a time through the creation of artificial reefs designed to incorporate art, innovative designs, and safe materials to enhance marine habitats, protect coastlines and provide a unique diving location. Our research investigates artificial design improvements, coastal protection with wave reduction modules, coral restoration, oyster restoration, mangrove restoration, seawall enchantments, fish population dynamics & recruitment to contribute to effective restoration. Our artistically crafted reefs enable every individual the opportunity to create an eternal reef for their loved one or company. Art themed reefs connect the local community history and culture while creating a lasting memory on the ocean floor that will help restore our marine ecosystems. Our education program seeks to empower and inspire our future generations to maintain our marine environments. Our citizen science program, Coral Rangers, engages our local communities in reef monitoring and coral restoration efforts. Our goal is to spread awareness and create marine habitats that will last for generations to come.
